Anchovies, tiny fishes no bigger than the size of cigarette
matches, are popular not only in Asian countries like Japan,
Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, but also in
America. It's generic name here is "anchovy" fish. Not all
anchovies that you see in the freezer section of a market
look the same or are the same. My favorite anchovies is shown
on the plate to your right. They are not cooked
or fried yet. In the US they are usually packaged in
small packages like 4 or 5 ounces and you can find them in
many Oriental markets in their refrigerator or freezer
section.
A very popular dish in Indonesia
is made from tempeh mixed with "ikan teri"
(anchovies), fried peanuts and tiny string potatoes from a can
(my version). Standard ingredients like garlic, galanga,
bay leaf, onion, salt, chili are included in the recipe.
Sweet soy sauce may
later be added to the tempeh. This dish in short is
called "sambal goreng tempe". You can eat this food
with warm rice for dinner, or eat them as snacks in front of
your television while watching your favorite DVD
movie..
You can find the recipe for this "sambal goreng
tempe" on the internet in English, Dutch or
Indonesian.
Enjoy good
tempeh!
