The vast majority of new immigrants in the U.S. were asylum seekers who first came to America with tourist visas; and once here they apply for asylum using the services of immigration lawyers, according to a friend. The lawyers taught their clients what to say when they appear before immigration authorities or judges.
Approval of asylum application is not based on “merit,” such as what they can do or what professional skill they have, but based on what they can say and what fake documents they can produce.
What can the government do to close this loophole quickly?
In my opinion, rules for asylum application need to be changed today. And once changed, they should be strictly enforced, no exception!
The burden to approve or deny an application should be consistent with other visa rules application. The local U.S. consular officer must be given the task to approve or deny application for asylum; here is where it should start, not at immigration offices in Los Angeles or New York. They know best what goes on locally. For example, Guatemalans, Hondurans, and anybody who wants to seek asylum in the U.S. must possess asylum visas when they arrived at our borders. If they don't, they must make a U-turn at the border and return to their country where they came from and apply for asylum visas from the U.S. Consulate, no exception!
Currently there are no such rules. Asylum seekers, ten or ten thousands, can show up at our borders walking by feet, traveling by bus or train, boat, or even swimming. This has to stop immediately. In time of peace, we must have an orderly rule for asylum seekers coming from all over the world. And that orderly rule is this - anybody who wants to seek asylum in the U.S. must possess asylum visas when they arrived at our borders. If they don't, they must return to their country of origin and apply for asylum visas from the U.S. Consulate there, no exception!
Congress has to change our asylum laws.
That way no families will be separated. No expensive hearing before a Judge is necessary. No precious time is wasted. They come together, and they leave together.
